Daily Cleaning and Maintenance
Regular Cleaning: After each playing session, gently wipe the surface with a clean microfiber or cotton cloth to remove sweat and dust. Hand sweat is corrosive and can easily lead to oxidation if not cleaned promptly.
Applying Protective Oil: This is the core of maintenance! Every 1-2 weeks, or when the handpan surface feels a little dry, you need to apply oil to it.
Method for Applying Maintenance Oil: You can use maintenance oil specifically designed for handpans, or you can use cooking olive oil or a water-free general-purpose maintenance oil. First, spray a little oil onto a non-absorbent cloth, and evenly apply the oil to the front and back of the handpan, especially each tone area, sound hole, and edge cuts, as these areas are prone to rust and oxidation. Wipe until it's semi-dry, avoiding excessive oil that could stain your hands or clothes.
Protection and Storage
Avoid Bumps and Impacts: The handpan's tuning is very sensitive; any slight bump or heavy impact can cause "detuning," meaning the sound quality deteriorates and may even become irreparable. When playing, it's best to use protective edge strips (such as rubber rings or braided strips) and play on a soft mat, handpan stand, or on your lap to avoid direct contact with hard surfaces.
Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Never leave the handpan in direct sunlight for extended periods or in cold outdoor conditions, such as in a car parked in the hot sun. Excessive heat or cold can cause metal deformation, affecting the tuning, and this process is irreversible.
Moisture Protection: Handpans are most susceptible to humid environments. If not used for a long time, you can put some desiccant in the bag, or store the handpan in a dry and well-ventilated place.
Avoid Prolonged Storage in the Bag: Although the handpan bag provides protection, leaving it in the bag for extended periods can lead to damage due to lack of ventilation and can also make you lazy about practicing. It is recommended to clean and oil the handpan after playing and store it in a well-ventilated area.
